Breville JE98XL Reviewed

Breville JE98XL Review

This review of the Breville JE98XL (a centrifugal model) is somewhat unfair. You see I am used to using the fabulous Omega VRT350 (a masticating model). But I will attempt to look at it from the perspective of someone who is both a first-time juicer and on a budget (JE98XL cost: $150 vs VRT350 cost: $350).

The first thing this review needs to mention is that the JE98XL is famous. This juicer has appeared in a movie. Can you guess which movie it was? That’s right… the JE98XL appeared in “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” alongside Joe Cross. If you’ve not seen the movie you should go watch it right now. At the time of writing this it’s free to watch on Hulu. Joe Cross traveled across the USA with his trusty Breville juicer so it should be pretty good right?

Well of course it’s a great juicer but at $150 it’s obviously going to be a centrifugal model and come with all the drawbacks of not being a masticating model (sorry but I like masticating juicers). Of course it’s well constructed and a reliable juicer from a respected brand. You only have to look at the reviews on this and other Breville juicers to see that Breville is doing a great job of making juicers. And the price point is well chosen. It’s an affordable centrifugal juicer that looks good and does what it supposed to, plus there’s dual speed which is a bonus.

Breville JE98XL Review

If $150 is within your price range and you want a tried and tested centrifugal juicer I say go for it. The huge majority of reviews online are positive although there are some negative ones (as with anything). If you’re really hankering after a masticating juicer I would pass and look at Omega’s 8000 series which starts at around $230 with the Omega J8003 or even better buy the model I use, an Omega VRT350!

Breville JE98XL Description

Drink to your health. Get into the world of juicing with this no-nonsense dual-speed juice fountain. The Dual speed motor allows you to juice hard fruits and vegetables such as apples and beets on high speed by spinning the filter at 12,000 RPM. Low speed is optimal for softer fruits and leafy green vegetables such as cantaloupe and spinach.

The Juice Fountain Plus cutting disc is so powerful that pineapple can be juiced in large chunks with the rind on. This updated model includes an improved 1 liter juice jug with froth separator and an overload protection LED to protect the motor.Easy, lightning-quick operation and simple clean-up. Healthier living starts here.

Enjoy the superior flavor and nutrition of freshly juiced fruits and vegetables with this counter top juicing machine. Simple to operate, the 850-watt unit features an extra-wide 3-inch feeder chute that accommodates even large chunks or entire pieces of fruit or vegetables, which means less chopping beforehand. Just place a glass or small pitcher under the spout, insert the desired produce, and gently press down using the included pusher.

The juicer’s ingenious dual-speed motor and powerful stainless-steel cutting disc quickly and effortlessly extract the juices from a variety of foods, including soft melon and cucumbers or rind-on pineapple, thick-skinned apples, and carrots. In fact, it can produce 8 ounces of juice from whole apples in just five seconds. Choose high speed (12,000 RPMs) for denser fruits and harder vegetables and low speed (6,500 RPMs) for leafy vegetables and soft fruit.

The machine comes equipped with a large-capacity pulp collector, which captures the maximum amount of bitter pulp, seeds, and skin to yield smooth, delicious juice. Other highlights include a handsome heavy-grade polymer exterior, a safety locking arm, overload protection LED to protect the motor, and top-shelf dishwasher-safe removable parts for quick cleanup. Accessories include a 1-liter juice jug with a froth separator, a stainless-steel micro mesh filter basket, and a cleaning brush for the micro mesh filter basket. I’ve personally found masticating juicers to produce a juice that is thick and pulpy. I’ve tried juice from an Omega Vert and a Hurom HU100 (borrowed from friends) and disliked the consistency of the juice. I’m thinking of trying the Breville JE98XL since it’s been featured in “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” and it’s not too expensive. Being a centrifugal model the juice should be more to my liking. I would love to hear your thoughts on the JE98XL.

I strongly believe that the best juicer is one that you use every day. I typically recommend masticating models over centrifugal because they typically produce a higher quality juice with more nutrients and beneficial enzymes. But I understand your experiences with masticating juicers. The juice does tend to be thicker. The pulp can usually be strained out of the juicer and many models come with a strainer. Some people prefer centrifugal models because they are cheaper and tend to be quicker to use. The JE98XL is a good juicer for the money and it is well designed. I like the fact it has the dual speed and is well constructed. I would much rather someone buy a juicer they will use regularly than a juicer they use a few times and then put in the cupboard. I say go for it and keep on juicing!
