There is a lot of talk recently about juice fasting. Juicing is increasing in popularity due in part to documentaries like “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead”. There is an ever increasing range of juicers, books, DVDs and websites to support people who want to juice. But what exactly is juice fasting and how does it differ from regular juicing.

Fasting generally means to go without food. Many cultures and religions practice fasting but juice fasting is different. The reason is that juice fasting allows you to consume freshly made fruit and vegetable juice. So you are in fact not fasting in the traditional sense. You are actually replacing regular meals with juice.

Juicing Vs Smoothies

One common question I get asked is if it is better to make juice or make smoothies. That’s really a difficult question to answer because there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Both allow you to consume raw fruits and vegetables but consider the following when choosing between juicing and making smoothies.

Smoothies are made in a blender which doesn’t remove any fiber. Juicers remove fiber and produce pulp. Fiber is still present in juice but in lower quantity than in a smoothie.

Fiber comes in two forms, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is absorbed into the bloodstream and does useful stuff like lower cholesterol and help to balance sugar levels. Insoluble fiber helps to bulk up the stool and keep the digestive system healthy.

If one of your goals is to lose weight then juicing can offer a great alternative to regular diets. The reason that juicing is such a great way to lose weight is because it maximizes the nutrients your body is getting in relatively few calories.

Most diets work by reducing the amount of calories you take in. Combining a calorie controlled diet with exercise reduces your calorie intake and raises the amount of calories you burn. But there is one huge flaw in this technique.
