Breville BJE510XL Ikon Variable Speed Juice Extractor

The Breville BJE510XL is a top end centrifugal juicer. It’s price point is interesting in that at $200 it’s bordering on masticating juicer territory. So why buy a pricey centrifugal juicer when you could pay a little more and get a low end masticating juicer?

The answer is features. If you’re someone who likes a lot of features then this is the juicer for you. Personally I would sacrifice features for better juice quality but hey, it’s your money you’re spending.

Juicing Vs Smoothies

One common question I get asked is if it is better to make juice or make smoothies. That’s really a difficult question to answer because there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Both allow you to consume raw fruits and vegetables but consider the following when choosing between juicing and making smoothies.

Smoothies are made in a blender which doesn’t remove any fiber. Juicers remove fiber and produce pulp. Fiber is still present in juice but in lower quantity than in a smoothie.

Fiber comes in two forms, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is absorbed into the bloodstream and does useful stuff like lower cholesterol and help to balance sugar levels. Insoluble fiber helps to bulk up the stool and keep the digestive system healthy.

Breville BJS600XL Fountain Crush Masticating Slow Juicer

The Breville BJS600XL is Breville’s answer to the Omega VRT350. It is Breville’s vertical masticating juicer aimed at savy juicers with a decent amount of cash to spend on a new juicer. At around $350 it feels slightly pricey compared with the Omega VRT350 which has a slightly higher price point (although you can get one on sale for around the same price of $350).

It would have been nice if Breville had priced it lower at say $320-$330 but it’s really not a bad juicer. Reviews are mainly positive and the juicer feels well constructed and it juices even hard produce with ease. However, I find it really hard to justify buying it when you can get the Omega for practically the same price. If you like Breville as a brand then this is a great juicer but I can’t help that feel Breville would have been better going for a lower price point. If it was me I would buy a VRT350 for this price.

Update: The Breville BJS600XL was recently on sale at Amazon for $209.99!!! Sorry if you missed out on that deal but I did tweet about it on Twitter. It’s currently selling at just under $300. This lower price makes this juicer a much more attractive proposition. I suggest you check the current price on Amazon when considering if you should purchase this juicer over other vertical masticating models. I still love the Omega VRT350 but the Breville BJS600XL is a great juicer too. Check out the latest price here.
